Must Have Items When Traveling With a Baby

Must Have Items When Traveling With a Baby

After several long trips with my son in the first nine months of his life I have learned a lot about what should and should not be brought along. The process of packing what you use at home and the reality of dragging it all around with you are completely different. From car safety to feeding you don't want to miss a beat. Read on to find out what you don't want to forget when traveling with baby.

Birth Certificate

The only form of identification most parents have of their little ones is a birth certificate which you need to travel. If you are traveling outside of the country you should make sure you get your baby a passport as they are required for everyone now days. The airlines make you show the birth certificate to prove that the baby is as old as you say they are and so they can have them on record in case of emergency.

Car Seat

The wonderful thing about airplane travel these days is that most airlines check your car seat for free if you have your baby on your lap. Since there is a fee on each checked item it can save you about twenty-five dollars each way. However, if you bought a ticket for your baby then you have to take the car seat on board to safely seat them. No matter what you need the car seat on the other end so it must go.

Stroller

As a huge convenience to you the airlines gate check your stroller when you travel. That means you can push your child from plane to plane and not have to worry about carrying them around the airports. Then you leave it at the cabin door when entering the plane for the airlines to put with the luggage for the duration of the flight. When you arrive at your destination it will be waiting for you when you exit.

Portable Sleeper

There are several different items you can bring for your baby to sleep in when they are very young like a co-sleeper or travel bed. However, when your baby starts to move around and cannot sleep unattended it is important to have a pack and play along so they can sleep safely. This item you will have to check under the plane but it is a must have for rolling around and mobile babies so they don't hurt themselves.

Self Soothing Items

Some babies use binkies or pacifiers and some use blankets. Whichever work best for your baby make sure you pack it for the trip in your carry-on luggage. Grab a handful of binkies and put them in a clean zip lock bag so when one gets dirty on the flight you can just grab another. There are also paci-wipes for sale at most big stores in case they all make it on the floor or you lose some while traveling.

Baby Carrier

A baby carrier or sling work great for traveling with your baby, especially when you are traveling alone. They help when you need both hands for eating your own meal or going to the bathroom. It is also nice to have the carrier along if baby gets fussy and you need to walk the isles so that you have your hands free in case of some turbulence.

Diapers, Wipes & Toiletries

Make sure to pack enough diapers, wipes and toiletries (diaper cream, baby wash, baby lotion, gas drops, Infant Tylenol) for the day of travel and a couple of days after you arrive. This way you have time to find your brand of diapers, wipes and products at the stores where you are visiting.

However, if you are traveling out of the country then you might want to stock up in your suitcase so you don't have to worry about finding what you use in the stores.

Clothing

Packing clothes according to the weather report where you are traveling is a good start but make sure you pack long sleeved clothes as well when traveling to a warmer climate. While you may be wearing shorts and a tank top your baby may need a long sleeve top in the shade. On the other hand if you are traveling to a cold climate you probably only need cold weather clothing for your baby.

If you know there will be laundry facilities available then you can bring about half as many outfits. This way you don't have to worry about running out or packing too many outfits. To be safe plan to use about two outfits per day and a pair of pajamas.

Food & Drink

Whether your baby is drinking formula or breast milk you will want to pack accordingly. For formula feeding pack three or four complete bottles, a bottle brush, formula and buy bottled water once you pass security for the plane ride. Pack enough formula to last the whole trip so you don't have to worry about finding more.

For breastfeeding mothers you will want to pack your nursing cover, nursing pads and a bottle to put some baby juice or water in for takeoff and landing so their ears pop when pressure builds up. Also the bottle of juice and water is great to help keep baby hydrated in between feedings.

If your baby is also eating purees and baby snacks make sure you pack plenty for the trip. Bring enough jars, bibs and spoons for the day of travel and the first day you arrive in your carry on in case they lose your suitcase. Make sure you put all the baby food in one large zip lock bag so you can pull it out when going through security. Also since you have to pack quite a bit of baby food for the trip the room it takes up in your checked bag will be great for bringing home souvenirs and gifts.

Toys

When babies are small they are easily amused by a cup or ball which you can most likely find on the other end of your flight. Do not take too many toys but a few favorite little ones are just fine. Those links are great because you can hook them onto the car seat or stroller and the baby can play with them and a few rattles, mirrors or teething toys linked onto them while you are out sightseeing or visiting.

Safe Travels

While traveling can seem like a huge ordeal it can be lots of fun with baby when you pack right. Hopefully you can use the list of items to help pack for your trip and not feel that you took too much or missed something important. Good luck with your vacation and have safe travels.

Where Do Grapes Come From?

Where Do Grapes Come From?

I imagine that most people immediately think of the hot Mediterranean countries such as France, Spain and Italy will grow the vast majority of grapes. And we get a tiny proportion from maybe California and Australia. While that assumption is largely right plenty more countries also produce the grapes that end up in your shopping basket or go into your next bottle of wine.

From my own knowledge of years in the business as a grower and from some research here is the top ten grape producers worldwide:

1) Italy
2) France
3) USA
4) Spain
5) China
6) Turkey
7) Iran
8) Argentine
9) Chile
10) Australia

Now while this list is is only an approximation it can vary wildly according to the criteria used. For instance, a list can be based on amount of area given over to growing or the amount of produce grown each year. What I particularly wanted to illustrate is that many more countries than we take for granted have thriving vineyards. Who would have imagined places like China and Iran and not to mention Romania or Lebanon all growing vines and producing magnificent crops and wines.

My own country of England as history knows was conquered by the mighty Roman Empire and it was these same Roman's who introduced vine growing to this country. Admittedly the climate was warmer and more temperate around the first century and from the latter part of the sixteenth century temperatures began to decline.

Wine grape growing is however on the increase in England with over four hundred vineyards prospering at the present time. This news will I hope be a broad hint to you, I want you to realise that you can plant vines and grow your very own fruit right in your own garden almost anywhere. So why not give it a go? It is not only a fun and rewarding hobby but you can produce your own wine or you can sit back with a bunch of succulent grapes of your very own.

Grace Family Vineyards

Grace Family Vineyards

In my continuing effort to educate my readers about cult wines, I was reminded that I have not written about what amounts to perhaps, the first cult wine in California: Grace Family Vineyards.

The story of the Grace Family wine name starts the same as so many others in the wine industry, one family member started growing grapes because they were interested in wine and the most amazing thing happened: it turned out that their microclimate was perhaps perfect to make outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon.

The family farm was first planted and bottled by Dick Grace, whom has since relinquished control of the family business to his son Kirk. Kirk has continued the hands on approach started by his father (an ex Marine, perfection leads to great wine) and has adapted to grow all of their fruit not only biodynamically, but also organically. He has also continued one of the aspects that makes Grace unique, their wine bottles are hand painted.

Over the years the family has added close to three additional acres, but they still have a waiting list of approximately four thousand people that want to become members of their wine clubs.

What's the wine like? Honestly, I have no idea, like I said there is a four thousand person waiting list for their clubs, but California cult wine hardly ever disappointing and Kirk Grace now manages Stag's Leap Cellars which is an outstanding producer in their own right. Other reviews have described them as incredibly complex, yet balanced with a different flavor profile then you'd expect from a California Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact the most often comparison seems to be with Marguax, an incredibly famous French wine estate in Bordeaux. Being compared to a first growth French estate is not something to be taken lightly for a new world producer, it speaks to both the care and ability in growing the fruit and winemaking as new world producers exist in warmer climates which raise alcohol levels and make it more difficult to achieve balance in the wine.

If you can find a bottle and can spare the expense... give Grace Family Cellars a try... let me know what you think!

Five Great Spots to Relax in Europe

Five Great Spots to Relax in Europe

All of us have those spots that just make us smile and feel good; those areas that bring a rush of emotion. You might chuckle when you think about them walking down the street and you may even wonder where the person's next to you is. In the next few paragraphs I'm going to tell you all about mine.

Now now, don't let your mind travel down that path; I'm talking about those individual and specific places in Europe that hold a special place in your heart. These are the locations that you return to again and again to sip your favorite wine or relax as the tide rolls in. They are the little plots on this earth where you feel comfortable, relaxed and at home; no matter how far away your mortgage is paid. I can't say exactly why these places are dear to me. All of course bring back memories of great times or strong emotions but some seem to do this for so many people it makes me think that there is just something innate to the area.

1. Piazza San Marco, Venice Italy:

St. Mark's Square is accurately if not figuratively referred to as the center of Venice. With St. Mark's Basilica at one end and the Campanile (iconic bell tower) rising high as a symbol of Venice the piazza makes an impression. Lacking the din of automobiles that fill most Italian cities but still providing enough outdoor seating for high priced cafe's to hawk expensive coffee to tourists, the buzz of relaxed conversation supplies ambiance.

During the day the center of this massive space fills with pigeons and tourists. The similarity between the two is enough to bring a smile to your face. Both chase each other around; one feeding one with cracker crumbs the other nourishing its counterpart with spectacle (and one can't help think, disease). Early in the day I wander the city like any visitor to Venice should. Getting lost and with only one concern; finding a bottle of wine to enjoy. Personally I am no connoisseur of wine. If you slap an attractive picture on the front, it's red and inexpensive I'm happy. Still, in Venice, the bottle I end up with is the only thing I was ever destined to find.

As dusk begins to fall I make my way to the stairs surrounding the square. Taking a seat opposite the Basilica on one of the three stairs that run the length under the Museo Correr (or the Napoleonic wing of the Procuraties) I open my wine. People watching for the next hour or two in this spot at this time of day is repeatedly one of the best moments of my life. The sun falls slowly causing a slight chill in the almost enclosed area, people drift by arm in arm, violins compete softly with each other to bring crowds to their employer's cafe and all the while you are more aware than ever that you are in Europe and have accomplished your dream. As the glow of the lamps encircling the piazza brighten I know the time has come to finish my wine and walk slowly and appreciatively back to my bed for the evening feeling fulfilled and once again complete.

2. The Stiftskirche Steps, Tübingen Germany:

Surely this is one of those locations you just don't end up in like many other major cities in Europe. My personal attachment to this town was that I spent what was probably the best year of my life there during a study abroad experience. The memories I have most definitely influence my decision to place this location on my list but the simple setting and care free atmosphere incite me to share.

In the center of Tübingen, a University city south of Stuttgart, lies the Stiftskirche. Gothic in style and built in 1470 this church was among the first to make the conversion to Protestantism. The result is an intriguing juxtaposition of faith and architecture. At its base lie long rows of steps and in front of that a large round fountain that one finds either decorated with local flowers or sealed up to prevent damage in the winter. Narrow cobblestone pedestrian streets lead away and along the front of the church and guide strolling locals into half timbered buildings that house used book stores, bakeries and an assortment of other goodies. In the building to the immediate right of the fountain there is a window and from this window the smell of Turkish Doner kebabs and swarma rises.

In the warmer months as well as those times when snow is beginning to fall I would gather along those steps with friends from many different countries. Laying a foundation of Doner in our stomaches we would move on to purchasing bottles of beer from the tasty smelling window shop. At 1.80 Euro a bottle with a ten cent refund (pfand) with the return of the bottle the location is both cheap and convenient. The local shops would close for the evening and parents would push their children along snuggled in their strollers towards their destination. University students would begin moving about the city in search of good conversation and we could watch it all, knowing we had already found our destination as well as great conversation.

Sometimes hanging out for hours, the night would eventually grow cold and each would head home in turn, still thinking about the topics discussed amongst intelligent University students on the steps of the Stiftskirche.

3. The hill top in Kinskeho Zahrada, Prague Czech Republic

Just south of the Prague Castle there is massive park that is largely on a hill. Trails run their course back and forth through the green grass (in the summer) and lead travelers towards PetÅ(TM)ín Tower; the Eiffel Tower looking structure. If the sun is shinning and a cool breeze is in the air you'll want to take an afternoon and a small picnic down Karmelitska (which will be on your left after continuing west from crossing Charles Bridge). When you hit Helichova you will turn right. At the end of Helichova you can begin your stroll up the hill. If worst comes to worst and you get lost just head towards the tower.

On your way up you will pass joggers and other locals enjoying a park that many tourists never give the chance it deserves. As a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of the city you can start to hear the Czech birds chirp and the Prague trees rustle. Before long and without much effort you begin to get a nice view of the city as you rise above the rooftops of the neighborhood below. When the mood strikes you, wander off the trail and find a nice area to lie in the bright green grass and stare up at the sky.

On a beautiful Prague day I find little that is more relaxing than lying on this hillside with a nice breeze blowing along the grass and the sun shining brightly off the adobe colored rooftops below. With a warmth in the air and the coolness of the greenery around me I love to sit and watch as the clouds roll by. Trying to decide what each resembles seems like a game provided to me specifically to distract my mind from any care I have in the world and for awhile I can slip away from the stress travel can bring.

4. The wave break in Cinque Terre, Monterosso Italy:

Becoming more and more popular by the year Cinque Terre is developing into the go to place in Italy. Consisting of five distinct, small fishing villages connected by train and trail each town has a charm of its own. Whether you're up for lounging on the beach, eating some great seafood or taking a hike towards the next town while passing the grape vines that yield the local wine this place is beautiful. You will have to watch out for skyrocketing prices for accommodation however. The locals know you want to invade their city and they will make you pay.

The first town on the west is Monterosso. Here you will find what is probably the best and largest stretch of beach of all the villages and as I reported in an earlier article, the best seafood spaghetti I have ever had. Wandering the city during the day is a joy as locals stroll the streets and shop in local stores along side visitors from other countries. Small wine shops sell a huge variety of their wares and church bells ring at hours that seem odd to US travelers. When you arrive in the city you will have to leave the train station and head east through a long tunnel that takes you to old Monterosso. After you exit the tunnel and come down the ramp turn to your right to see the waves break gently on the beach. Along the cliff wall is a walk way that leads out to a rock wave break that prevents the larger waves from approaching too fast.

As night falls and with a bottle of local wine in hand I love to make my way out to the wave break area. Finding a comfortable spot I sit down open the bottle and relax to the sound of the sea just as generations of Italians have done before me. When the sun is down completely the city remains alive with the glow of the street lighting. The occasional fishing boat will head out to sea to work on tomorrow's fresh catch and periodically the train will rumble along the track that is raised high above those out for an evening stroll. Occasionally you may find another traveler enjoying this area but all in all the solitude the sound of the sea and removal of big city traffic provides is more than enough to sit back and dream of owning your own home in a fishing village in Italy.

5. Plaza de San Nicolás, Granada Spain:

Granada offers visitors a huge amount of sights to see, food to taste and culture to immerse oneself in. Standing with some of the best sights to see in all of Europe is the Alhambra which recently was up for the vote as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Still, while the interior of the Alhambra is not to be missed, catching a view of this Moorish stronghold from Plaza de San Nicolás is definitely a must see.

Located in the Albaicin area of Granada this plaza offers the best view of the Fortress and provides a great place to relax. Finding one's way can be a bit confusing amidst the maze of streets and alleys that make up this neighborhood so bring along a map or follow the small crowds of tourist. You will have to make your way up hill to reach this small plaza but the strain is worth it. All in all the area is not that large but looking south provides one of the best views anywhere.

I typically set out about an hour before dusk in search of this high white wall that creates the border of Plaza de San Nicolás. Travelers dangle their feet over the side of the wall, a small drum circle beats a calming atmosphere into existence and everybody's gaze is to the south. Across the way lies the Alhambra which at dusk begins to be lit up with bright spotlights that make the fortress look as if it is made of gold. Behind the Palace lies the snow topped mountains of the Sierra Nevada and as the sun sinks to your right you find it hard to take your eyes off the beautiful scene in front of you. Throw your legs over the side of the wall, snap a few pictures and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere.

Baby Bottle Warmers - Why You Need Them and What Are the Advantages

Baby Bottle Warmers - Why You Need Them and What Are the Advantages

Baby Bottle Warmers - why do you need them?
Mom's need to be careful when heating pumped breastmilk or formula. If you heat breastmilk in the microwave it can change the milk's composition which cause the milk to lost certain anti-infective properties and nutrients even when microwaved for a short amount of time. This is why they are very effective and why most newborn's parents are buying them. Breastmilk is generally very sensitive to warm temperatures and can very eaily lose it's vitamin C content. Heating breastmilk on the stove is also ineffective because it causes a central spike in temperature which cause the breaskmilk to break apart. Just like microwaved breastmilk, it causes a loss of minerals, immunological properties, vitamins and micro-nutrients very quickly. So what can you do? You can obviously put the pumped breastmilk in a sterilized bottle and run it under hot water for ten minutes - but who wants to do this when a newborn is screaming because he or she is starving? The same thing goes with formula. For years doctors have been saying that microwaving formula causes horrible heat distribution which can burn babies' mouth's and bellies. Although most people shake bottles to avoid this - it always does not work because heat tends to re-conglomerate immediately. Warming the water is a much safer method.

How do you use baby bottle warmers?
Most can easily heat pumped breastmilk and formula in about one to three minutes. They are very convenient because if the baby's room is upstairs you can keep the warmer up there also. By the time you change your newborn's diaper the baby bottle warmer could have easily warmed up 3 or 4 ounce of milk. They are very easy-to-use, quick and reliable. You would never need to worry that your new babysitter will over cook a bottle in the microwave. I bought one of the Philips Avent iQ baby Bottle Warmers and it works like a charm. You just add water into the container and select setting. You put the bottle in and close the lid and leave it. The baby bottle warmer heats the milk by very quickly evaporate the water and heats the breastmilk without any hotspots and without breaking down the milk's composition. Now that my baby is up to about 4 ounces, I can warm a bottle up in about 3.5 minute to heat the milk to a perfect temperature.

Who would have known that heating breastmilk or formula would be such a science!! On top of the great advantages noted above, I find that my baby simply prefers warm milk so it is perfect for me. It is very convenient, it does not take up a lot of room and I can easily put it in any cupboard when I am done with it. It is very compact and you can take it into any room! A little hint for most of the bottle warmer out there - if you can use distilled water then do it. Otherwise if you use tap water, your baby bottle warmers will have some mineral build up.

So are baby bottle warmers a necessity?
I think so. I think that if parents are going to bottle feed their baby pumped breastmilk once in a while or formula, if is an absolute necessity. Not only does it have many advantages but they are very simple to use. You add water and stick the bottle in. When it's done warming the baby bottle warmer lights up and that's that. Shake the bottle and feed the baby. The baby bottle warmers on the market today are able to hold both big thicker newborn bottles, short, tall or skinny bottles. They work great at night and you can do the whole process with one hand.

Which ones would I recommend?
Definitely the Philips Avent. It's been fantastic for my husband and I. The First Years Night & Day Bottle Warmer System is a good one because it is also a bottle cooler. If I were to do it again I would probably buy the Gerber Bottle Warmer or the Munchkin Deluxe Bottle And Food Warmer With Pacifier Cleaning Basket. The Gerber Electric Bottle Warmer has great reviews and is fantastic to travel with. The Philips Avent Express Baby Food and Bottle Warmer is also a great baby bottle warmer.

Remember using a microwave for pumped breast milk and formula is never recommended for heating your baby bottle. Not only is it difficult to judge how long you should heat the bottle for, it breaks up it causes a loss of minerals, immunological properties, vitamins and micro-nutrients very quickly. Hot spot are a danger to sensitive babies. You can run bottles under hot water but why wait ten minute and keep checking. This is the greatest gift we got for our newborn. These are revolutionary products that will warm frozen breast milk very safely, quickly and without destroying the important vitamin and nutrients that babies need. The advanced thermostatic controls on them and the thermal fuse allows you to warm bottles, disposable bags with frozen pumped breastmilk without boiling or over-heating. Another hint - get one with a timer!!

Pros and Cons of the Baby Bottle Warmer

Pros and Cons of the Baby Bottle Warmer

To some people, the use of the baby bottle warmer is the greatest appliances made for babies ever. With any type of electronic product, there are usually pros and cons associated with it. This article will examine the benefits and downside in using the baby bottle warmer to heat the baby's food.

There are many benefits that are associated in using the baby bottle warmer. The most important is the fact that it is able to keep the liquid in the bottle at a constant temperature. If a parent was supposed to heat the bottle on the stove or in the microwave, it would be a hassle to be constantly checking to see if it was warm enough or if it was too hot. Another benefit in using this product over the microwave is the uneven way in which the microwave heats food. There can be spots in the milk or formula that could be either too hot or too cool and there is no consistency. Another benefit is the fact that in some cases you can heat the baby's food while you are out on the road or are travelling. Simple warmers that use batteries or a car adapter are available to ensure that the baby will always have his food warm when he needs it.

The baby bottle warmer is not without some cons. It is very useful at heating the product, but sometimes inferior products heating element can get so hot that it possibly could melt the bottle. There also have been complaints from parents who feel that the formula or milk did not get heated to the proper temperature. This could be extremely annoying if you have a hungry baby and their food is not warm enough. Another concern that parents had was the fact that sometimes it would take a long time for the bottles to warm up to a respectable level. The optimum time stated by some manufacturers was in the region of 4-9 minutes. However depending on the model then the time to accomplish this could be way ahead of the stated period.

In closing the baby bottle warmer [http://www.thebabybottlewarmer.com/] is a product that was created to make a parents life easier. It was a simple option to heat the food without resorting to the stove or the microwave. With all devices there are always positives and negatives in using them. It was good at keeping the temperature the same, and also gave parents the option to carry it if they were going to be mobile. On the downside some devices could take a long time to warm the food and faulty heating elements could cause the bottle to melt.

Bottle Warmer - Pros and Cons of the Baby Bottle Warmer

Purpose of the Baby Bottle Warmer

Purpose of the Baby Bottle Warmer

Having a baby is one of the greatest gifts parents can have. A baby is the result of the union of man and woman and it brings so much joy into the parent's lives. A baby is not fun and laughs all the time, as there are things such as crying, changing and feeding which all can make baby raising a harder job than it is. This article will examine an appliance that makes it easier for parents to handle their baby raising, this product is the baby bottle warmer.

A baby bottle warmer is a product that is responsible for heating up a baby's formula, milk or liquid food. It accomplishes this by allowing up to two baby bottles to be placed into the device. Once in there, a heating element warms the liquid up to a temperature that is safe for a baby to handle. The device is designed where it will keep the temperature constant and not make it too hot or too cool for the baby. This optimum temperature makes it a very useful device for parents as it is hard to keep track of a heated bottle in the microwave. The baby bottle warmer is also useful for heating jars and bottles and this makes it a multi-dimensional product.

There are different types of baby bottle warmers aside from the one which you can use in your house. Some companies have made portable ones which can be used if a parent is out on the road and needs to heat the food on the go. There are also warmers that are made specifically for the car. These are extremely useful if you are going on a car trip or some other journey in your automobile. Using both of these products, the car and portable warmer makes it better for the baby as they are able to get their food on the go.

Making sure that your baby is fed is part of the job description when you have a young child. Ensuring that your baby's food is warm and at the correct temperature is one aspect that parents have to be sure that they get right. Luckily the baby bottle warmer [http://www.thebabybottlewarmer.com/] exists, that means you will be able to heat the food and keep it at the correct temperature with no problems. There have also been other types of warmers such as car and portable have made it easier for baby's to get their food warm if they are outside of the house.
